Delivering ECT Induction in a British School Overseas
A Key Benefit of BSO Accreditation
One of the significant advantages of holding British Schools Overseas (BSO) accreditation is the ability to offer Statutory Induction for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) who hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
This unique benefit positions your school as a highly attractive option for newly qualified teachers who wish to complete their induction while gaining international experience.
Who Can Offer ECT Induction?
To support ECTs through the official DfE Statutory Induction programme, a school must meet the following conditions:
Have completed a successful DfE BSO inspection within the last six years
Hold full membership with one of the seven UK Government-recognised school associations
Be working with a registered Appropriate Body (AB) to oversee the induction process
The Association of British Schools Overseas (AoBSO) is proud to be one of these DfE-recognised associations, supporting school leaders in delivering high-quality professional development aligned with UK standards.
Why This Matters
Offering ECT Induction gives your school a distinct advantage in recruitment. Many Early Career Teachers are actively looking for international placements where they can:
Complete their ECT Induction
Gain valuable overseas teaching experience.
Remain on track for full teaching recognition in England.
BSO-accredited schools with the ability to offer Statutory Induction are uniquely positioned to attract this talent.
The Role of an Appropriate Body (AB)
An Appropriate Body (AB) is a statutory requirement for any school delivering ECT Induction. The AB is responsible for:
Overseeing the quality and consistency of the induction process
Monitoring ECT progress through formal termly assessments
Providing professional support and intervention where needed
Making the final recommendation to the Department for Education (DfE) on whether the ECT has met the Teachers’ Standards and successfully completed induction
Without an AB, the induction cannot be formally recognised by the DfE.
Who Acts as the AB for BSO Schools?
As of August 2024, the Secretary of State for Schools has appointed Educational Success Partners (ESP Education) as the sole specialist Appropriate Body for BSO schools.
This appointment ensures that all ECT Inductions carried out in BSO-accredited schools overseas are aligned with statutory expectations and monitored with the same level of rigour as in England.
